The
Conference had three
goals. It aimed to:
strengthen the international
sustainable development law agenda
highlight the role of international law in sustainable development,
and
review the progress in international sustainable development
law made since 1992 to generate recommendations for the
World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002.
Sustainable Justice 2002 achieved
three broad sets of results,
as part of a wider community of legal actors working on
these issues:
Increased information, knowledge and analysis of international
sustainable development law among legal experts, professionals
and jurists in civil society, the private sector, governments
and international legal bodies. This has generated higher
profile and awareness of ISDL issues leading up to the 2002
WSSD and beyond.
Stronger capacity, networks and professional links among
ISDL professionals, jurists and legal scholars in international
social, environmental and economic law around the world.
This was generated by the joint development and launch of
the CISDL, with a flagship publication and six ISDL work
programmes.
Serious provisions on ISDL governance, negotiation, implementation,
monitoring and enforcement in the 2002 WSSD process. These
were generated through a series of policy and legal briefs
generated by the project on 10 key legal issues. Recommendations
from the Sustainable Justice 2002 process were fed into
the 2002 WSSD PrepComs and consultations, leading to ISDL
strategies being highlighted the WSSD Implementation Plan
and Political Declaration.
Sustainable
Justice 2002 and CISDL WSSD activities
deliverables included:
A fully launched and operational Centre for International
Sustainable Development Law.
A series of legal briefings for the World Summit for Sustainable
Development, on topics such as What is ISDL, Precaution
