Law for Sustainable Development: A WSSD Side Event
The CISDL hosted an Official Side Event at the 2002 WSSD in
Johannesburg on August 29, 2002. The event launched of the
results of two international conferences on Chapter 39 of
Agenda 21, and sustainable development governance issues:
Sustainable Justice 2002, in Montreal, Canada and EnviroLaw
2002 in Durban, South Africa.
A Launching Event::
The new Weaving the Rules for Our Common Future: Principles,
Practice and Prospects for International Sustainable Development
Law, a 250 page legal capacity building manual on ISDL.
The 2002 International Jurists Mandate for the Implementation
of International Law for Sustainable Development, signed by
over 202 international legal experts and including a strong
commitment to WSSD follow up.
The Audience:
The room was booked for 75, but over 320 government delegates,
officials, members of the legal community, civil society organizations
and others participated.
The Partners:
The Side Event was organized by the CISDL, in partnership
with the International Law Association (ILA) and the International
Development Law Institute (IDLI), as well as with the organizers
of the Enviro Law Conference 2002, South Africas largest
law firm, UNEP and the World Bank. Canada, Switzerland and
South Africa, co-sponsors of the prior side event which defined
this agenda in the New York PrepComm III co-sponsored the
event.
Other
CISDL International Law for Sustainable Development WSSD
Activities:
The CISDL hosted workshops and prepared briefings and papers
for WSSD negotiators in the Preparatory Committee meetings
in New York and Bali, including papers for the Canadian
International Development Agency on the links between social
policy and sustainable development law.
The CISDL co-hosted the UNEP Global Judges Symposium, providing
briefing materials to the Justices and technical support
to the Supreme Court of Canada for participation.
The CISDL delivered a series of legal briefs on key issues
such as the Rio Principles and the link between SD and Human
Rights to the WSSD negotiators, resulting in changes to
the text.
The CISDL hosted a stand at the Ubuntu Village, which highlighted
the results of EnviroLaw 2002 and Sustainable Justice 2002.
The CISDL hosted a Press Conference on international law
for sustainable development issues, during the WSSD High
Level segment.
The CISDL joined the International Development Law Institute
(IDLI)
The CISDL, with the IDLI and the ILA, presented a Type II
Partnership to the United Nations plenary session.
