Ms. Karina Kessaris, B.Sc. (McGill), is an Associate Fellow with the CISDL. She was formerly assistant manager of the CISDL, and project coordinator for the CISDL Judicial Education Project on environmental and sustainable development law, which CISDL leads with the National Judicial Institute and Hon. Justice Charles D. Gonthier of the Supreme Court of Canada. Ms. Kessaris is a candidate for combined degrees in civil and common law at the McGill Law Faculty. She has marked interests in trade and environmental issues as demonstrated by her role in Environment Law McGill (ELM) as organiser of the ‘Greening the FTAA?’ conference held in Montreal on March 17th and 18th, 2003. Ms. Kessaris has also worked for the environmental strategy division at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, where she focused specifically onenvironmental impact assessments of trade agreements. Ms. Kessaris’ interest in sustainable development sprung from a 3 months period of travel and volunteer work in Kenya, where she was able to enter into contact with different aboriginal populations and witnessed first hand their relationship with the land and its wildlife. She has also done peace-keeping work in Bosnia. Her research focuses ontrans-boundary environmental protection and sustainable development. Her career goal is to become a negotiator for Multilateral Environmental Agreements and to seek greater visibility for environmental and social issues in international trade law. She speaks French and English, and has a notion of Spanish and German.
