Kishan Khoday is a Canadian of Indian origin, serving as Assistant Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Beijing, China. Kishan has served with the UN since 1995 on issues of sustainable development, in India, Indonesia and now China. Prior to joining the UN in 1995, Kishan worked with several NGOs, government agencies, and research institutes in Canada.
A CISDL Legal Research Fellow since 2004, Kishan supports CISDL research activities in the areas of international trade and investment law, climate change, comparative constitutionalism, and corporate responsibility. Recent CISDL publications include “Trade and Sustainable Development in Asia – Managing Social Exclusion, Conflict and Poverty” in Sustainable Development in World Trade Law, and “Globalization and the Evolution of Environmental Governance in China’s Socialist Market Economy” presented at the 4th IUCN Environmental Law Academy Colloquium.
Publications in 2007 include an article in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Environmental Law on “Global Governance and Human Security in the 21st Century - The Security Council debate on climate change as a threat to peace and security under Article 51 of the UN Charter”, two Tsinghua University, Beijing Working Papers on “Law, Development and Social Equity in Asia: A Comparative Analysis of Land Law as a Tool for Legal Empowerment of the Poor in India and China” and “Applying Complexity Theory to the Challenge of Integrated Legal Responses to Global Environmental Change”, and an article in the Review of European Community and International Environmental Law on “The Role of the Private Sector in Implementing UN Conventions on Climate Change and Biodiversity”.
Kishan also serves as a Visiting Scholar at Tsinghua University in Beijing where he lectures on China/India Comparative Constitutionalism, and Climate & Energy Law. He holds a Juris Doctor in Law from Vermont Law School, M.Sc in Resource Management and Administration from Antioch New England Graduate School and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from McGill University.
