Prof. Gabriel Ricardo Nemogá Soto, LL.B. (Colombian Free University), MA (Brunel University, UK), BA (National University of Colombia), is a senior research fellow with the CISDL. As a professor at the National University of Colombia, he teaches courses on biodiversity and law, access to genetic resources, and policy and legislation on biological resources and the environment. Prof. Nemogá leads an interdisciplinary research group on “Policy and Legislation on Biodiversity, Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge” (PLEBIO). He worked as a director of the General Office of Socio-legal Research in the Ministry of Justice and Law and founded the Institute of Social and Legal Research (UNIJUS) at the National University of Colombia. He acted as a technical advisor for the development of a national plan for bioprospecting and was a principal researcher on legal regimes on access to genetic resources for Colombian environmental institutions. He is also a member of the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights at the National University of Colombia. Currently, he is completing a PhD in Ecology (University of California – Davis) where he is a Fulbright scholar. His research was on traditional knowledge systems of medicinal plants of Maya Peoples in Calakmul, Mexico. He has participated in meetings of the FAO and the CBD. He has written articles on property and access regimes on genetic resources, traditional knowledge and intellectual property rights issues.
