Prof. Qin Tianbao

Prof. Qin Tianbao, Dr. iur. (WHU), LL.M. (WHU), LL.B. (WHU), is Hongyi Distinguished Professor of Law, Dean of the School of Law, and Director of the Research Institute of Environmental Law (RIEL) at Wuhan University, China. He is a CISDL Senior Fellow and a leading expert in environmental and climate law, biodiversity governance, and sustainable development.
Prof. Qin is Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Environmental Law, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Chinese Society of Environment and Resources Law (CSERL) and serves as Lead Author and Review Expert for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He was Deputy Chief Judge of Environment and Resources Division of the Supreme Court of China.
Prof. Qin has led or contributed to the drafting of several major national environmental laws and serves as a legal advisor to the Chinese delegation in international negotiations on biodiversity, ocean, and climate change. His research focuses on biodiversity and biosafety law, climate and energy law, water and oceans governance, environment and health, and transboundary and global environmental issues. He has published numerous books and over 100 academic articles in these areas.
He is a native Chinese speaker, fluent in English, with a working knowledge of German.
