Lead Counsel, Biodiversity and Biosafety

Professor Jorge Cabrera, B.C.L., LL.M., M.B.A., D.C.L. (University of Costa Rica), is Professor of Environmental Law in the postgraduate program on environmental, agricultural and biodiversity law at the University of Costa Rica. He is the a governor and the Lead Counsel of Biodiversity and Biosafety Programme at CISDL.

Prof. Jorge Cabrera was a legal adviser of the National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) and is an international consultant in the area of Intellectual property and biodiversity, biotechnology and biosafety, access to genetic resources and benefit sharing and environmental law. Formerly a tutor of the distance courses on intellectual property of WIPO. He is a member of the World Union of Agricultural Law Professors (UMAU);  the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law among others. For more than 4 years, he is a member of the National Biodiversity Commission of Costa Rica and negotiator of the CBD on behalf of the Government of Costa Rica, including Head of the Delegation in the First Conference of the Parties (Nassau 1994) and member of the delegation in the COP V (Kenya), VI (Holland), VII (Malaysia) and VIII (Brazil), IX (Germany) and X (Japan).
