Elena I. Athwal, SJD Candidate (HBKU), LLM (Harvard), JD (HBKU), is Associate Fellow of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, and the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ICELIS Global, a Qatar Financial Centre licensed advisory firm specialising in sustainability, energy transition and ESG governance. She is also Secretary General of the International Law Association (GCC Branch), where she also chairs the Committee on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law. She serves as an Executive and Managing Council Member and Global Media Officer of the International Law Association.

Elena is an S.J.D. candidate in International Energy and Environmental Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and holds an LL.M. in Environmental and Energy Law from Harvard Law School together with a J.D. from the HBKU College of Law. She serves as Research Fellow to the UNESCO Chair on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at HBKU, Research Associate to the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights, Research Associate to the OGEES Institute at Afe Babalola University, Chair of the Energy Transition Working Group convened by ICC Qatar with the Al-Attiyah Foundation, and Member of the Board of Directors of the Produced Water Society. She is a junior member of the International Bar Association Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law (SEERIL), and the first scholar in the Middle East to hold the IBA SEERIL Law Studies Scholarship. Her research addresses the intersection of energy and environmental law, human rights and sustainable development.
