Elena I. Athwal is a Research Fellow for the UNESCO Chair of Environmental Law & Sustainable Development at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Doha, Qatar; a Research Associate for the United Nations Working Group on Business & Human Rights (UN WGBHR), Geneva, Switzerland; and a Research Associate for the Institute for Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (OGEES), Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria. Elena has an LL.M. in International Environmental & Energy Law at Harvard Law School, and her J.D. in Energy and Environmental Law at the HBKU Law School, in Doha, Qatar. She was the LL.M. Representative for both the Harvard Environmental Law Society and the Harvard Human Rights Law Journal, as well as the Outreach & Communications Director for the Harvard Human Rights & Business Student Association, and the Project Director of Climate Justice for the Harvard Law School student group HLS Advocates. Elena is also the Global Media Officer for the International Law Association (ILA). She is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), Environment, Energy and Resources group (SEER), and the International Bar Association (IBA) Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law (SEERIL). Her research interests lie at the intersection of energy and environmental law, human rights and sustainable development in the Middle
East and African regions.
