Dr. Andrea Mensi Lecturer in international law at Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano and adjunct professor of international environmental law at the University of Milan; Andrea is an attorney at law admitted to the Milan Bar. He represents victims before the European Court of Human Rights and he is a counsel admitted before the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights. He is the author of a monography entitled ‘Indigenous Peoples, Natural Resources and Permanent Sovereignty’ (Brill – Queen Mary Series of International Law 2022).

Andrea obtained his Ph.D. in public international law in 2021 at Bocconi University in Milan, with a thesis entitled ‘Indigenous peoples, natural resources and permanent sovereignty’, supervised by professors Roger O’Keefe (Bocconi) and Ilaria Espa (USI-WTI Bern). Andrea graduated cum laude in law in 2015 at Università Cattolica in Milan, with a thesis in international trade law supervised by Prof. Francesco Bestagno.

Since 2020 Andrea is adjunct professor at Milan University where he teaches international environmental law. In 2019 he was admitted to the Bar winning the Marco Ubertini prize for the best newly qualified attorney in Italy. As an attorney, Andrea practices before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), having particular experience on cases concerning cultural and social rights. Previously, Andrea gained experience in the European Union institutions, working in 2017 for the European External Action Service (EEAS) at the EU Delegation to the OECD and UNESCO in Paris. Andrea worked for three years as trainee lawyer in leading law firms in Milan on different areas of civil and criminal law, including European Union law, banking and finance regulation.

He gained experience in academia since 2015, working as teaching assistant in European Union and International law and being part of exams commissions at Università Cattolica, Università Bocconi and Università dell’Insubria.

His research areas and publications include general public international law, international environmental and human rights law. He is particularly interested in minorities and indigenous rights. In 2018 he won the Raffaele Barletta Myllennium Awards 2018, sponsored by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, for an essay on the Brexit.
