Prof Cheluchi Onyemelukwe is full Professor of Law at Babcock University, Nigeria, where she teaches and researches on health, law and human rights. She is also founder/Executive Director at the Centre for Health Ethics Law and Development (CHELD), a non-profit which does significant work in sustainable development, the right to health and universal health coverage, the SDGs, child protection, migration and climate change in Africa at local, regional and continental levels. She is also Managing Partner at Health Ethics and Law Consulting, a law firm which advises in the health and social sectors. She has advised governments, regulators, healthcare businesses across the valuechain. She has been a legal advisor at the International Health Regulations (IHR) Secretariat in Geneva, where she provided legal support for several countries’ implementation of the IHR and the Joint External Evaluation. She has provided advisory on health and migration for the African Union Commission. Her advisory also includes support for the World Bank, ECOWAS, the Commonwealth Foundation and other development entities. She represents Nigeria on the Legal Network of Experts on Migration in West and Central Africa since 2022. She has supported health law and policy development in Nigeria and Africa and is currently the Chair of Nigeria’s National Taskforce on Decriminalisation of Attempted Suicide. She is author of Health Research Governance in Africa: Law, Ethics and Regulation (Routledge, 2018) and journal articles on health, gender and climate. She is the recipient of several awards including, most recently, the Powerof100 Africa awards recognising her leadership and impact in health and the law in Africa.
