Lawyers have a critical role to play in facilitating and accelerating the urgent, transformational change necessary to achieve net zero. Many young lawyers and graduates understand and value the imperative of the Race to Zero and are looking to make a positive impact in their careers. This session introduces students and young practitioners to some of the ways in which corporate, finance, tax, trade, investment and disputes lawyers can be part of the transition from net zero ambitions to net zero obligations, and also to opportunities for cutting-edge new legal research and impact in the emerging field of climate law.

Paul Barker is a barrister in independent practice at Doughty Street Chambers in London, specialising in international arbitration, investor-State dispute settlement and sustainable investment, and is also a Research Fellow at Stanford Law School’s Gould Center in Silicon Valley, where he focuses on renewable energy and climate change policy. Paul is recognized as a leading barrister and arbitration lawyer by Who’s Who Legal.
Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger is the Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor, University of Cambridge, Senior Director, Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), Executive Secretary, UNFCCC CoP26 Climate Law and Governance Initiative, and Full Professor of Law, School of Environment, Entrepreneurship & Development, University of Waterloo.
Sung-Hyui Park is a Senior Associate in the Impact Economy team at Bates Wells, the first UK law firm to be certified as a B Corp. She advises on the full range of activities carried out by organisations seeking to have a positive social impact, including capital-raising, governance and legal structuring. Her clients include charities, social investors, development finance institutions, certified B Corps and other purposeful businesses.
Nicola Peart is a senior associate at Three Crowns in Washington DC, where her practice focuses on international commercial and investment arbitration, as well as public international law. She has a particular interest in international climate change law, and has over ten years experience attending and advising on the international climate change negotiations. She is also a member of the ICC’s Task Force on the Arbitration of Climate Change Related Disputes. Nicola is recognised in Legal 500 (US) for her arbitration expertise.
Thom Wetzer is Associate Professor of Law and Finance at the University of Oxford and the Founding Director of the Oxford Sustainable Law Programme. Thom’s research focuses on how we can leverage law and finance for the common good. He acts as an advisor to governments, international organisations, and companies, including the ECB, Bank of England, and UNEP.
